At a recent Bike Roswell Board meeting,  Robert Wilhite of MyCycleCoach.com fielded questions regarding the addition of his Riding Skills classes and other educational/safety initiatives to BR’s new Education Program.  Currently, the City of Roswell holds the Bronze status as Georgia’s only Bicycle Friendly Community.   Their goal  in  establishing a more robust  program is to achieve the ‘Silver‘ status  for 2010.

Tentively, the first series of educational classes will be held from November to January with discussion to potentially expand  expand the schedule throughout the upcoming year in hopes of making it a permanent on their Education Program roster.

Specifically, Robert Wilhite will be facilitating a one-hour interactive seminar on Group Ride Dynamics and what every cyclist should know before riding in a group.   Immediately following, will be a short group ride so everyone can practice what they learned.  You will gain tremendous confidence and knowledge so the next time someone invites you to ride with them or in an organized group ride, you will know exactly what to do, how to chose who you will ride behind and avoid unnecessary crashes.

RIDE REVIEWS-

When Robert’s Bike Blog started earlier in 2009, the intent was to create a forum to talk about anything cycling; not from a ‘coaching’ perspective but from Robert the cyclist.

Being off the bike for 3 months from wrist/hand surgery, obviously Robert was anxious to get back on the bike.  When his surgeon gave him the green light, he rode 18 group rides over the next two weeks.  After seeing so many of the same things that happen in group rides, Robert found himself writing about those experiences in the Blog.  This review of sorts continued and then he started getting invitations to other group rides in metro Atlanta and was asked to write a review for their rides.

That’s the history, or progression to a full blown Ride Review section in his Blog.

Now comes 2010.  Robert plans to hit as many group rides as possible and take this to a whole new level.  Yes, there are many sites that offer ride information (distance, pace, etc.) but there is no resource anywhere, EXCEPT MYCYCLECOACH.COM, that a cyclist can go to learn about the ride.

For example, you will learn things like:

~ how safe the ride is, or not

~ the level of riding organization (spread out or in pace lines)

~ overall riders attitude (tense, uptight, relaxed, I know everything)

~ how well the group knows/practices safe group ride dynamics (or principles)

~ was it enjoyable, did anyone notice you were dropped

There are SO many group rides in Atlanta; don’t just pick a ride and show up...read about it and know what to expect before you get there.  Yes, there are many types of rides and the goal is to feature as much of a variety as possible.  Whether you are a casual rider, speed demon (wanttobe), or somewhere in the middle, Robert’s Ride Reviews has something to offer you.

If you would like your group ride featured, send your invitation by clicking here.  Before long, Robert’s Ride Review will be THE cyclist’s resource for group rides.

Check out Robert’s BLOG and read reviews from 2009.

JACKSON COUNTY BREVET

JACKSON COUNTY BREVET...

                      Made History.

Being inspired by his wife Kelly, Robert decided to do something about a 25 year old, out-dated treatment for Aplastic Anemia, a disease that Kelly has been suffering from for over 25 years.  That was the end of February 2010 and when the Jackson County Brevet was born.  Three and a half months later, almost 600 cyclists showed up to ride in the first ever event in Braselton, GA.

“I couldn’t sit around and do nothing”,  Robert  said when talking with his wife about wanting to spend the rest of their lives together.  You see, they just met in September 2008 and married in March 2009, now with a marriage that they both had desired all their lives.  Both in their forties, it seemed like life had just begun with their recent marriage.  “I told her I couldn’t change the world, but I did know cycling”, and with that statement, the rest is history.

They made history alright.  For a century ride in its first year to have that high of a turnout, is quite rare.  A few things were in their favor as most of the metro Atlanta cycling community had never ridden in Jackson County before, so the announcement of a new ride in a whole new area caught their attention.  Overwhelming responses from those who rode the smooth terrain of Jackson County are already asking for next year’s date.

Aplastic Anemia, the benefitting charity, is expected to receive an estimated $20,000 from this year’s event.  Robert has said his goal for next year is $50,000!!!  If you heard the passion and determination in his voice when he talks about this, you would be convinced it is a done deal.  “I don’t care...I’m going to do whatever it takes to modernize treatment for this deadly disease.  My goal this year was $5,000 and we blew past that like a hurricane, so I don’t think $50,000 is unrealistic.  I hope you are one of the 1,000 plus who will be there next year”, he says.

The magnitude of success from this first ever event prompted an unexpected call from Aplastic Anemia’s current Executive Director John Huber, to personally congratulate Robert and Kelly.  “You have no idea what an impact you have made from this event” John told the couple in their telephone conversation.

Robert has begun working on getting a date for 2011, among many other aspects of how to improve and expand the Jackson County Brevet into a premier cycling event, not only for cyclists to enjoy but also to continue to raise awareness for Aplastic Anemia.  Watch for upcoming announcements on their Facebook page.

Because the response regarding the routes/terrain of the Jackson County Brevet were so overwhelming, we created a monthly group ride...with a SAG vehicle for full support.  The 2nd Saturday of every month will feature a different route and distance but the SAG vehicle will always stay the same.

Very well marked routes and an easy-to-find start location.

DATE:  August 14, 2010 (Saturday)

TIME:  7am roll time

PLACE: Addictive Cycles  (MAP)

DISTANCE:  52 miles

You will have access to a full service bike shop for any last minute needs as well as any mechanical assistance.

Help spread the word about the new monthly group ride.  If you come once, you’ll be back again...and again...and again.

DIRECTIONS:

Heading North: Take 85-N to exit #129.  Turn right, go 2.1 miles.  Addictive Cycles will be on your left.
